Ideas for car and house use for Microsoft Origami.

It seems that I’m almost the only one stoked about the newly announced product from Microsoft called Origami. The Origami is a ultra mobile pc with 7 inches display, touch screen, wireless networking and has about 2 or 3 hours battery life. From the information I’ve been getting, it seems that its price range would go from 600USD to 1000USD depending on the model.

The device is definitely too expensive for my taste but nonetheless here’s what I would do with it.

In the house

- Smart home: With the cost of setting up a smart home (lights, air conditioning, heating controls, camera system) and wireless network going down and being affordable everyday, I would have the Origami as a console in the master bedroom or any room where putting a computer is not acceptable.

- Universal remote: Use the device has an universal remote for the multitude of devices that are crowding the home theater set-up these days. Taken in consideration that the Origami would have a way to send signal out to these devices.

- Stream media to TV or sound system: Hooked up to the home network and connected to the TV or sound system to stream content or playback MP3 or AVI.

In the car

- GPS (Global Positioning System): With the screen size of the Origami, having it in the car in not a bad idea to help you find your way around town or on road trip.

- Send tracks to the car: One thing that’s been annoying me with my car (Chevrolet Equinox) is that my iPod could not interface with the in-car sound system. Now with Microsoft new toy not only I could connect it to my car and have it next to me for controls but I could also send or get tracks from the car to the home network with the addition of a small car power supply which would also charge the Origami while on the road. Setting it up in-dash would be awesome. I would of course need to be in range of the wireless network. So before leaving for work in the morning, a quick download and i’m gone.

- Movies: With in car LCD displays now being installed stock by some manufacturers and the ability for the Origami to play AVI, MPG and DVD’s that seemed to be a no brainer. You could even use the Origami for display since most car LCD’s are about 7 inches diagonal as well.

If you can figure out any other decent use for the Origami, drop a comment.
